What is Robot?

Robot:

 

            A Robot is a mechanical machine that somewhat resembles a human being. It is capable of performing a variety of complex human tasks. Robots function either on command or are programmed in advance for doing something.



 

            Robots are designed for many purposes. The Unimate was the first digitally operated and programable robot. It was installed in 1961 to lift hot pieces of metal from a die casting machines and stack them. Nowadays, robots perform jobs that human find dull, dangerous or difficult. In manufacturing, they are used for welding, scraping, and painting. They are also used for demolition, fire and bomb fighting, nuclear site inspection, industrial cleaning, laboratory use, medical surgery, agriculture, forestry, office mail delivery as well as a number of other tasks.

            More artificial intelligence is also being added to them. For example, some of the robots can identify objects in a pile and can identify faces of man, select the objects in the appropriate sequence and assemble them into a unit.

            It does not mean that robots are better or even equal to human beings. There is so much robots cannot do. For example, robots can not conceive a literacy work. They can not show emotions. A robot can not console in desperation. Similarly, robots can not solve a problem like human beings. Robots do only which they are programmed for.

            ASIMO by Honda is the most developed humanoid robot. It can lift the weight, run at a speed of 6 Km/hour, go upstairs and downstairs, interact with its environment, can distinguish and recognize voices and faces. ASIMO can itself charge its battery at the nearest electrical source.
